How do you write a prayer request?

You need three things: what is happening, how it feels, and what you want prayer for. Be specific where you can. "Pray for my job situation" is fine, but "pray I hear back about the interview and do not spiral before then" gives people something to hold. Name the feeling too: scared, tired, hopeful, numb. That is honest, not oversharing.

Keep it short. One or two sentences is a complete request. If you only have energy for "pray for me today, it is a lot," that counts.

What makes a request easy to pray about?

A clear ask. "Pray for my sister" is a topic. "Pray my sister and I can talk this week without it turning into a fight" is a request someone can picture and follow up on. Pick the one thing you most want prayer for right now, and lead with that.

Example prayer requests by situation

Every example below is invented. Swap in your own details, or send one almost word for word if that is easier tonight.

Health

  • Example: "My mom's biopsy results come back Thursday. Please pray she gets good news and that we can stay calm while we wait."
  • Example: "I am having knee surgery next week. Pray it goes smoothly and that recovery is easier than I expect."
  • Example: "My grandfather has been in and out of the hospital. Pray for his strength, and that the doctors find out what is going on."

Anxiety and stress

  • Example: "I have a big exam Monday and I cannot stop spiraling. Pray I can focus tonight instead of panicking."
  • Example: "Work has been so heavy that I am barely sleeping. Pray for peace, and for some real rest."
  • Example: "I have been anxious about money all week. Pray I can think clearly about each bill instead of fearing the worst."

Family

  • Example: "My parents are arguing a lot and everyone at home is on edge. Pray for peace in our house this week."
  • Example: "My sister and I have not talked in months. Pray we can have one honest conversation soon."
  • Example: "My little brother starts a new school and he is nervous. Pray he finds a friend on the first day."

Work and school

  • Example: "I have a big interview Friday. Pray I do not freeze up and that it goes the way it should."
  • Example: "I am behind on a large project and worried about the deadline. Pray for focus, and for patience from my team."
  • Example: "I am applying to colleges and it is a lot. Pray I hear back from a good fit, and that I stop checking my email every five minutes."

A friend who is struggling

  • Example: "A friend just went through a breakup and is not doing well. Pray she feels less alone this week."
  • Example: "A friend has been down lately and will not talk about it. Pray she opens up to someone, even if it is not me."

Grief

  • Example: "It has been a year since my dad died and this week is hard. Pray for comfort, especially for my mom."
  • Example: "A friend lost her grandmother last week. Pray for her family as they plan the funeral and get through the next few days."

When you cannot say the details

Sometimes you are not ready to explain, or the story is not only yours to tell. That is still a complete request. You are leaving out the specifics on purpose.

  • Example: "I have an unspoken request tonight. I am not ready to talk about it, but I need it."
  • Example: "Please pray for something I am going through right now. Pray I feel less alone in it."

Not sure how to send one? This guide covers where and how to share a prayer request.

Update people later

Asking is half of it. When something changes, a short update tells the people who prayed how it went: "Update: the results came back clear, thank you for praying" or "She and I finally talked. It went better than I expected." You do not need good news to write one. "Still waiting, still feeling it, thank you for staying with me" is worth sending too.

Where to send a request

Send it to a person or group you trust: a friend, a small group, your church. Praize is another option. It lets people ask for prayer and hear someone pray for them by name, out loud. You record a request, choose who receives it, and the person who prays records a voice prayer back. Praize is in beta on iPhone and Android.

These examples help you put words to what you already carry. They are encouragement, not a substitute for professional mental-health care or pastoral counsel. If you are struggling, talk to someone trained to help alongside prayer.
